Book Review: Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I just finished Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It had been sitting on the “TBR” side of my bookshelf for a while, and with the warmer, sunnier weather finally arriving, it felt like the perfect time to pick it up.
What Drew Me to the Book
While I had already read and enjoyed Daisy Jones & The Six, I was especially drawn to this book because of the setting.
When I was young, my family made a yearly trek down to California’s coast because my grandparents lived there. So the idea of Malibu already conjures up a kind of early-eighties nostalgia for me. Like in the novel, it was a place of surfers, bohos, golden California girls and boys, and that sun-soaked coastal energy.
This novel is as fast-paced and character-driven as Daisy Jones & The Six — although there may be a few too many minor characters introduced along the way. From philandering father Mick Riva to eldest daughter Nina, who carries the family burden and legacy on her perfectly bronzed shoulders, the story is full of glamour, dysfunction, longing, and old wounds.
You’ll Like This Book If…
You are already a fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s style and enjoyed her other books. Fun fact: Carrie Soto, the tennis-playing protagonist from Reid’s novel Carrie Soto Is Back, is introduced in this one.
Overall, I think Malibu Rising is the perfect beachy, pre-summer read — nostalgic, dramatic, and easy to sink into, especially when the sun is out and you’re craving a little California atmosphere.
